The Battle of Bazentin Ridge 14 July 1916 – The Second Phase of The Battle of the Somme

document1

This is a Google Earth plan of the site of the first actions in the Battle for Bazentin Ridge. The British and Commonwealth positions are in red. The attack began at 3.25am on the 14th with only a hurricane bombardment. The German positions in the woods were not as well constructed as these were second and third line positions, as the first line was taken prior to this battle.

The Allies captured Bazentin and the wood and nearly broke the line. To the north west was High Wood. William was in action here.

Great post. I like the plan. I tried to do something similar with an aerial photo of the Montauban assault and will Post it tonight. Google Earth looks like it could have mileage for other locations. A Picture says a thousand words; even if the current sedate countryside hides some of the story.
