On the morning of 1 July 1916, at 0730, along the whole Somme sector from Arras in the North West to just beyond Albert in the South East, the whistles blew for the start of the offensive. What is known about the day has come from official accounts, eyewitness diaries and the scarring on the earth. Each tells the same tale once the softening of time is removed. If a reminder is needed, then just look at the tightly packed rows of stones each with the same date.
