Caterpillar Valley

Caterpillar Valley

Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, looking out over Caterpillar Valley, to High Wood (Bois de Foreaux/Forcaux). This valley saw elements of the Deccan Horse charge towards Longueval heights. Ultimately doomed, this action, if better timed, might have resulted in the retreat of the enemy from the heights. As it was, indecision fueled by previous Somme experience of high casualties, resulted in the empty High Wood being left to German occupation and the defenders of Longueval being able to fire across the ridge at the advancing horses. A spectacular sight, the death of the charge. Tanks would be used only two months later, the horses of the new age.
