La Grande Mine – The Crater of Lochnagar

La Grande Mine
The preserved crater of the Lochnagar mine, detonated at 07:28 on 1 July, 1916. Rushed by soldiers from the Allied trenches, the scene that greeted them was both horrific and terrifying. All around were the charred and broken remains of their enemy and their equipment. The mine needed to be taken and defended. Boys from the Grimsby Chums, the Tynesiders and others took the position and held it for as long as they could, under terrible return fire from the enemy.

Preserved in perpetuity, a reminder of the inhumaity of War.
