The slope approaching the village – approximately the site of the modern cemetery extension. The shot in 1916 was taken just after the ridge was taken and the modern day shot was taken in April 2013. At this spot, I found a dud shrapnel shell, just under the surface. William could have been among these soldiers and I have stood on this exact spot. It is so strange and deeply moving to know what has taken place here. The scale, the enormity and the struggle.
